Downsizing: Where Do I Start!

Author – SALT Member – Jay Shaw, ne: solutions

Downsizing is one of life’s challenges that sounds easy — but feels anything but – especially when you’ve looking around a home with years of memories and belongings.

Many delay downsizing and will “get around to it” – one day!  Not because they don’t want to do it – but simply due to not knowing where or how to start.

Whilst others jump straight in – often too quickly, only to become overwhelmed, emotional, or unsure if they’re making the right decisions. Whilst having the internal emotional battles from the ‘helpful’ voices of “throw it all in the skip”, “you don’t need all of this crap!

If you’re considering downsizing — for yourself or a loved one — this short guide will help you understand where to start, what to consider, and how to move forward calmly and confidently.

  1. Start with why, not what

Before sorting a single drawer or box, take a step back and ask:

  • Why am I downsizing now?
  • What am I hoping life will look like on the other side?
  • Is this my decision, or has something changed (health, safety, time pressures)?

Downsizing might be prompted by:

  • a move to a smaller home or lifestyle village
  • preparing for retirement or aged care
  • reducing physical or emotional burden
  • supporting family or planning ahead

Understanding your reason helps guide every decision that follows. Without clarity, it’s easy to feel stuck or second-guess yourself.

  1. Don’t start with the worst room or sentimental items

One of the biggest mistakes people make is starting with the most cluttered room, or hardest items first — photos, keepsakes, letters and heirlooms.

Always begin with low-emotion areas:

  • bathroom or linen cupboards
  • laundry
  • duplicate kitchen items

This builds confidence and momentum. It also helps you practise decision-making before you reach items with emotional weight.

A helpful mindset is:

You’re not deciding what to throw away — you’re choosing what moves forward with you.

  1. Break the process into clear stages

Downsizing is more successful when it’s completed in stages – rather than all at once.

A simple way to think about it is:

  1. Plan – understand timelines, space limits, and support needed
  2. Sort – categorise items into keep, gift, donate, sell/dispose
  3. Reduce – thoughtfully let go of what no longer serves you
  4. Prepare – organise what’s staying and where it will go

And Photograph – before and after photos are a great way to see progress and feel accomplishment on progress

Trying to do everything in one go can lead to exhaustion and rushed decisions. Giving yourself permission to slow down often leads to better outcomes — and less regret.

  1. Be realistic about space and lifestyle

Downsizing isn’t just about less stuff — it’s about a different way of living.

Ask practical questions early:

  • How much storage will I gain now or have at my new home?
  • Will I still entertain/live the same way?
  • What items genuinely support my daily life now?

Many people hold onto items “just in case,” only to find they don’t fit their new space or lifestyle. Visualising the next chapter — not the past one — makes decisions clearer and kinder to yourself.

  1. You don’t have to do it alone

Downsizing can stir up unexpected emotions: grief, guilt, anxiety, even relief. That’s completely normal.

Support might come from:

  • family or trusted friends (as long as they listen to your needs)
  • professionals who understand the emotional side of transitions
  • people who can help pace the process and reduce pressure

The right support shouldn’t rush you or take over — they should help you feel safe making decisions and ensure nothing important is overlooked.

Conclusion: Take one calm step at a time

Downsizing is not a single task — it’s a journey. Starting with clarity, pacing yourself, and focusing on what truly matters can transform a stressful process into a positive transition.

Remember:

  • Start with why
  • Begin with low-emotion areas
  • Break the process into stages
  • Be realistic about your next chapter
  • Seek support when needed

There is no “right” speed and no perfect way to downsize — only the way that feels right for you.

If you’re unsure where to begin, a clear plan — supported by experienced professionals when needed — can make all the difference.

Bonus: remember to check all pockets, book leaves and containers – you’ll probably be amazed at what you find
